Third Coast Percussion
Third Coast Percussion released an album of Steve Reich’s music to celebrate the 80th birthday of the American composer in 2016. This app gives you a chance to explore Reich’s musical ideas while creating your own music. Each of the three activity pages relates to a specific compositional technique used in Reich’s work.
Phasing starts with the looping idea of It’s Gonna Rain. Additive lets you assemble interlocking polyrhythms, working with Music for Pieces of Wood. Canons works with overlaid melodies, from Sextet.
The result is a visual appearance that represents the unique minimalism of Steve Reich and the simplicity of Third Coast Percussion’s teachings.

OUTCOME & IMPACTThe project resulted in an interactive app that invited audiences to engage with Steve Reich’s minimalist music in an entirely new, hands-on way. By enabling users to create, manipulate, and share their own musical patterns, the experience deepened understanding of Reich’s techniques while making minimalism accessible to a wider audience. The app not only promoted Third Coast Percussion’s album but also expanded the cultural reach of contemporary classical music through playful digital exploration.
